BBC Northern Ireland's live online coverage attracted 200,000 streams globally 25/08/2009

BBC Northern Ireland's live online coverage of this year's Kennedy International North-West 200 in association with Coca Cola Zero, attracted an estimated 200,000 streams from around the world.

The two hour long highlights programmes on BBC One Northern Ireland, broadcast on the Sunday and Monday nights after race day, gained an average audience of 115,000 and 126,000 respectively.

The live Friday night preview programme on BBC Two Northern Ireland attracted an average audience of 74,000, equivalent to 13 per cent share of the audience watching television at that time.

Meanwhile on the BBC's iPlayer service coverage of the North West 200 preview and highlight programmes gained more than 67,000 downloads collectively.

Mervyn Whyte MBE, Clerk of Course, said of the news “This year’s coverage was excellent and it is great to see a home-grown event like the NW200 receive such high viewing figures.  It was the 80th Anniversary for the NW200 and a very special year for all involved and we are delighted that BBC Sport were with us to broadcast the event to thousands of loyal fans. We at the NW200 are delighted with the new five year agreement with BBC which begins next year.”

Shane Glynn, Editor of Sport for BBC, added "We've just come to the end of our initial three year agreement with Mervyn and the Coleraine Club to broadcast the North-West 200, and we're very pleased with the content, across radio, online and television, that we've provided for local bike fans. Next year is the first year of our new five year deal, and we're looking forward to the challenge of building on and improving our coverage of what is undoubtedly one of Ireland's top sporting events."
