One of Ireland’s greatest road racers and an outstanding friend to the North West 200, Robert Dunlop tragically died following a serious incident towards the end of this year’s second Practice Night at the North West 200. With the full support of Robert’s widow Louise and sons William, Michael and Daniel, Coleraine & District Motor Club decided to proceed with the planned 2008 Race Day programme on 17th May, as a mark of respect and a fitting tribute to Robert Dunlop.
Prior to the first race a special tribute was read out and a minute’s silence held, so that all spectators could join together to pay their respects to a much loved road racer and Northern Ireland sporting hero.
Robert will be so sadly missed at all future race events and more poignantly at the North West 200 circuit. We all loved his wonderful personality, great sense of humour, his generosity and loyal friendship. Robert was a true gentleman and we will sorely miss his presence both on and off the circuit.
Coleraine & District Motor Club received thousands of messages which were posted on our special web based Book of Condolences. This book has now been closed and we would like to thank everyone for their words of support which have been passed on to Robert’s family.
